The Hughes Scholarship Program

As part of undergraduate bioinformatics at GWU, a special opportunity is available to select GW students in the next few years: The Hughes Scholarship Program in Bioinformatics.

Why consider the Hughes program?

  • Introduction to the field of bioinformatics (which includes both biology and computer science but is also linked to physics, chemistry and engineering).
  • Optional summer research internships with GWU faculty, some of which are paid ($5000/student). The summer internship is a great opportunity to engage in research with program faculty and stay on campus (possibly taking courses).
  • The program is part of regular BS and BA degrees that satisfy pre-medical requirements. This is a good program for premed students to consider.
  • Students in the Hughes program will get stronger consideration when applying to our Master's program in Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics.
  • An opportunity to learn something about bioinformatics even if you ultimately major in other sciences (physics, chemistry).
  • Prestige associated with Hughes scholarhips.

Note to Freshmen/Sophomores:

Are you intimidated by the terms "bioinformatics" and "research", and by the fact that you might be working alongside seniors? Don't! This program is very accessible to freshmen - the introductory course only needs a high school biology background; no computing background is needed at all. This is a great opportunity to learn something about a new, growing field full of career opportunities.

Highlights of the Hughes program:

  • The program is open to all years: freshmen to seniors.
  • Students are expected to take 2-3 courses as part of the program:
    • CS 177: Introduction to Bioinformatics.
    • A course in Bioinformatics Laboratory Techniques (offered in the summer - the course number will be announced in Spring).
    • A research seminar offered in the summer.
  • Several summer internships for $5000 (the scholarship) are available to students on a competitive basis.
  • No background is required, but an interest in either biology or computer science (especially the combination) is expected.

Highlights for 2003-06:

  • CS 177 will be offered in the Spring.
  • Some scholarhips may be awarded early (in March) and others will be awarded just prior to summer (May) since this is the first offering of the program.

To apply to any of the programs, in particular, the Hughes Scholarship either:

  1. Download this application form in Word format and print it.
  2. Visit the biology department office (340 Lisner) and pick up a form.
